Jonathan's 1st Communion Cake

Jonathan's cake was a simple cake for a very special family get together.  His mom decided on a chocolate cake with white frosting and I made my vanilla bean buttercream for the occasion.  If you look closely, you can see the flecks of vanilla bean throughout the cake.

For his cake, I wanted to keep it looking masculine, so I opted for the blue sprinkles on top to outline the cross.  I think the effect turned out really nice.

Congratulations and blessings to Jonathan on his very special day!

Sophie's First Communion Cake

Sophie had big plans for her First Communion cake.  She really wanted a blue cake.  Royal Blue.  And she wanted a host with a gold cross on top with light blue accents.  And she wanted a red velvet cake.  And a chocolate cake.  She had big plans.

Together we sketched out her design.

And thanks to her detailed plan and description, this is what she got.

Congratulations and blessings to Sophie on her very special day!

Addy's First Communion

Eloise's big sister, Addy, received her first communion this weekend.  They had a joint celebration for the two girls.  So, I wanted the two cakes to coordinate nicely, but also be different enough to truly capture both of these wonderful milestones.

I used Wilton tip 12 to make the pull-out dots on the top of the cake.  The little flowers and the cross are made of fondant.

I used a cut-out to make the floral imprint on the cross and I like how that turned out.

My camera setting makes this cake look yellow, but it was really a nice soft white buttercream.

Congratulations and many warm blessings to Addy on this wonderful occasion!

Aidan's First Communion

Kelli requested a communion cake for her son, Aidan. Together, Kelli and I looked through the Wilton.com website to come up with some ideas for the blessed event. She was looking for something a little different than just the plain sheet cake which she finds at the local grocery store.

She came across the Faith Mosaic cake from Wilton.com. http://www.wilton.com/idea/Faith-Mosaic-Cake She loved the design but asked me to include some darker blues in the mosaic mix.

Because she was looking for something a little more interesting, I offered to color the cake batter as well, in different hues of blues and she loved the idea. I used a white cake recipe and colored the batter in three different blue colors and swirled in some white as well. Here's what it looked like right before it went into the oven.

This cake is a two-layer white cake with buttercream filling. I opted to leave the filling white to prevent everyone's teeth and lips from turning blue. :) Covering the cake in fondant wasa little tricky as I had never covered one in the shape of a cross before. And, finding the topper to the cake proved to be a little challenging. Michael's didn't carry it, but my local Ben Franklin did. At the last minute I was able to find the last little communion boy and get it for the cake. Phew!

I think the cake turned out really well.

Congratulations on your First Communion, Aidan!
