Baby Cumberbatch Shower

We were thrilled to hear that my sister-in-law, Rachel and my husband's brother, Jake, are expecting a little boy later this year.  They live on the west coast and were planning a visit to Wisconsin this last weekend.  I thought it would be a great opportunity to host a baby shower for Rachel while they were in town.

As a joke, they started calling their little guy "Cumberbatch" after seeing a movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch.  He also plays Sherlock on the BBC version of this character.  So, I opted for a Sherlock themed baby shower.  Surely that hadn't been done before!

Here is some of the decor.  Blue balloons, of course.  I made four mini-diaper cakes and stuffed cake pops in as toppers.  The cake pops were our parting gift.

A local restaurant in town used parchment paper with a London newspaper theme.  They gave me a few sheets of this great paper and I used them to decorate each of the cake boards.

I found this great onsie at CafePress.com.

Here's the cake, topped with gumpaste baby shoes.

Rachel's favorite cake flavor is chocolate.  So here's her chocolate cake, with chocolate fudge and Oreo filling and chocolate buttercream frosting.

I went to my local Ben Franklin Crafts and found some great scrapbook paper.  I cut out little Sherlock silhouettes and onsies for this banner.

My friend Sarah, who has her own Etsy page for crocheted items, made these Sherlock hats for the special occasion.  One for Daddy and one for baby Cumberbatch when he arrives.

And here was the menu:

Fruit Water

Coffee and Moriar-TEA

Fruit Pizzas

Fruit Ka-Bobs and Veggie Vases

Caprese Bruschetta

Deviled Eggs

California Quinoa Salad

Sandwiches

Asian Pinwheels
Cucumber Salsa

Josie and her Grandma made this little family tree.  As guests arrived, they wrote down some advice for the new mom and placed their leaf up on the tree.  When their gifts were opened, each guests advice was read to Rachel.

We had a great turnout and a fantastic day!  What a special occasion to celebrate!  We can't wait to meet the new addition to our family!

  3. Joan - Here's the recipe - ENJOY!!!!

    California Quinoa Salad.
    Adapted from Plant Strong

    1 1/2 cups quinoa
3 cups water, for cooking quinoa
    1/2 tsp salt
12 oz. bag frozen shelled edamame
    1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
    7 oz. sweetened shredded coconut
    1 bunch cilantro, minced
    2 fresh mangoes, diced
    1 red bell pepper, diced
1 red or sweet onion, diced
    1 1/2 cups raisins
5 oz. package slivered almonds, toasted (about a heaping cup)
    Juice of 5-6 limes

Bring the water to a boil in a medium saucepan. Rinse the quinoa and add it to the boiling water with the salt. Reduce to a simmer and cook for about 15 minutes, until the water is absorbed. During the last 5 minutes of cooking time, add the edamame to the pot and stir. When the quinoa is cooked and the edamame defrosted, add the balsamic vinegar and stir. Set it aside to cool to room temperature.

In a large bowl, stir together the remaining ingredients. When the quinoa and edamame are cool, stir them in. Serve at room temperature or chilled.

  4. And here's the recipe for the Cucumber Salsa. Delish!

    Crisp Cucumber Salsa:
Note: 1/4 cup is only 16 calories (without the chips)

2 cups finely chopped seeded peeled cucumber
1/2 cup finely chopped seeded tomato
    1/4 cup chopped red onion
    2 Tbsp minced fresh parsley
1 jalepeno pepper, seeded and chopped
    4-1/2 tsp minced fresh cilantro
1 garlic clove, minced or pressed
    1/4 c reduced-fat sour cream
    1-1/2 tsp lemon juice
    1-1/2 tsp lime juice
    1/4 tsp ground cumin
    1/4 tsp seasoned salt
    Tortilla chips

In a small bowl, combine the first seven ingredients. In another bowl, combine the sour cream, lemon juice, lime juice, cumin and seasoned salt. Pour over cucumber mixture and toss gently to coat. Serve immediately with chips.
